Incoming Freshmen (BBA): Registration Information for Fall Semester

 WELCOME TO THE ROSS SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN!

The Ross Academic Advising Team is looking forward to meeting you this summer during orientation and working with you throughout your time at Michigan. Please review these frequently asked questions (FAQs) as you start to plan your first year.

What is BBA advising at Michigan?

Academic Advisors are resources to help students:

  • explore their interests and set goals
  • understand degree requirements
  • identify academic options (minors, study abroad, dual degrees, etc.)
  • analyze course loads
  • create academic plans
  • set achievable goals
  • find appropriate support for any challenges they might face

BBA freshmen will have the opportunity to connect with Ross Academic Advisors during orientation and throughout their first year. Information on how to make an appointment with an advisor will be provided at orientation.

What happens at Ross summer orientation?

On the second day of your on campus orientation, you will meet with BBA Academic Advisors. Check your orientation schedule when you arrive for details.

At orientation with Academic Advisors, students will:

  • learn more about the BBA Program
  • review the BBA curriculum
  • meet other BBA students
  • connect with the Ross Academic Advisors & Peer Advisors
  • have the chance to ask any questions they might have

What Academic Requirements am I expected to meet as a Ross Freshman?

Freshman students directly enrolled in the Ross BBA are expected to meet the following minimum requirements during their first year:

  • Complete the following three courses at U-M Ann Arbor, each with a grade of C or better, by the end of Winter 2018: a course in First-Year Writing in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA), Economics 101 (including IB or A-level test credit for this course), Calculus I, II, or III (including AP, IB, or A-Level test credit for this course).
  • Successfully complete the following two courses at the Ross School of Business by the end of Winter 2018: BA 100, BCOM 250. Students are expected to take BCOM 250 on a graded basis.
  • Enroll in a minimum of 12 credits or more at U-M Ann Arbor during each Fall Term 2017 and Winter Term 2018.
  • Maintain “Good Academic Standing” at Ross with a term and cumulative grade point average of 2.500 or higher at U-M Ann Arbor.  If a student’s cumulative grade point average for Fall and Winter of freshman year falls below 2.500, student could be set on an alternative path within the program under the guidance of my Ross Academic Advisor. This alternative path will extend the Ross program until Winter 2022.

Freshman BBA students are also expected to meet the programmatic requirements of the Preferred Admission program during their freshman year at U-M:

  • Attend the BBA Freshman welcome event, which will be held on Friday, September 1, 2017, at the Ross School of Business (details for this event will be shared later). Please plan your arrival and move-in on campus to ensure full participation.
  • Meet regularly with their Ross Academic Advisor and participate in mandatory academic support activities as requested by their Ross Academic Advisor.

The Ross School of Business reserves the right to withdraw your BBA Admission offer if: 1) there has been a misrepresentation in or a violation of any of the terms of the application process; or 2) we learn that students have engaged in behavior prior to matriculation that indicates a serious lack of judgment or integrity

We further reserve the right to require students to provide additional information and/or authorization for the release of information about any matter. Finally, we reserve the right to require the withdrawal of any student whose condition endangers his or her own well-being or the well-being of other students or precludes him or her from doing the required work.

How can I find out more about the BBA Curriculum?

During your first year you will take a broad range of courses in addition to your Ross admission requirements. Below is some general information and answers to common questions regarding Ross program requirements. For more detailed information please visit the BBA curriculum page. Ross Academic Advisors are another great resource for answering curriculum and course planning questions.

​Q. What business courses do I take during my first year?

A. BBA Freshmen will be required to take BCOM 250 (1.5 credit hours), Introduction to Business Communications, during the Winter Term of their first year (Note: This course must be taken for a letter grade). BBA Freshmen are also required to attend a bi-weekly seminar course (BA 100–Intro to Ross: Foundations for Learning Business) as part of the program

​BCOM 250 and BA 100 are the only mandatory business courses students take in their first year. The only other business course opportunity for first year students is through a Ross Study Abroad Program. If you are interested, please review the information on the following website: http://michiganross.umich.edu/programs/global-initiatives/undergraduate-opportunities (Note: May study abroad courses do not count toward the 24 credit hour requirement, but do count toward the 2.500 GPA requirement for good academic standing).

​Q. What kind of courses should I look at completing my first year?

A. Aside from the mandatory admission requirements, it is suggested that you take courses counting toward your distribution or that help prepare you for future business coursework (such as Econ 102). Another suggestion would be coursework that adheres to a possible minor or other area of interest. Your first year at Michigan provides you with a great chance to explore different academic interests. Speak with your academic advisor about the wealth of opportunities offered at Michigan while helping to ensure that you are maintaining a balanced schedule

Q. What are the Ross distribution requirements?​

A. Ross students must complete three of the four areas listed in the chart below. We adhere to the same distribution course list as LSA so you should use their online list (https://lsa.umich.edu/cg/default.aspx) to find courses that fulfill the categories below.

Complete 3 of the 4 Areas Below
  • Foreign Language – 4th term proficiency
  • Humanities – 9 credit hours

  • Social Science (excluding Econ 101 & 102) – 9 credit hours

  • Natural Science and/or Mathematical and Symbolic Analysis – 9 credit

Q. Where can I find out more information on what I’ll be taking after Freshman year?
